1. Where should I save my personal files?

Don't save anything on the C drive or on the Desktop! Contents on the C drive are reset after every computer boot. This is done order to protect the computers from viruses and unwanted changes to the operating system.

You can use local disk D. There you can temporary put big files. Those files are accessible by every next user of this computer, so delete it at the end. Every month disk is erased.

Also you can use your personal cloud disk H. It's capacity limited to 500MB. It's permanent. It's accessible from Internet at https://myfiles.huji.ac.il

2. I saved a file and now I can't find it, what should I do?

First, it is important to know where you last saved the file. If it is on the C drive or on the Desktop and you already restarted the computer, nothing can be done to recover the file. Otherwise, you may try the next paragraph.

3. I deleted/have overwritten by mistake important files, what should I do?

1) If the computer has not been restarted following the deletion, the files can be restored from the Recycling Bin.

2) Files, as well as older versions of files from the personal directory (H) can be restored by right-clicking the folder which contained the desired, files, and selecting the 'Previous Version' tab.

Entire directories can be restored to previous version by selecting the desired version and pressing 'Restore'.

Alternatively, single files/folders can be restored by double-clicking the desired version and copying the files/folders:

4. Can I access my 'home directory' from home?

Yes, you can. Go to https://myfiles.huji.ac.il

5. How to compress big files?

Use 7zip software installed on the farm's computers.

6. How can I transfer files through FTP?

First, you need to know the address of the FTP server you are trying to connect to, and if needed, you need to know the username and password to log into the server.
To transfer files through FTP, you can use the FileZilla software located under START-> Programs.

You need to fill the Address, User, Password and Port (usually 21) fields as shown bellow:

After connecting you can transfer files from the server (right side) to the local drive (left side), and vice versa, by dragging them.
